What it covers

Prescribing safety

checks at the point of order

  • Drug–drug and drug–allergy checks run when the prescription is written, not after.
  • A formulary gate: non-formulary drugs need an override, and every override is audited.
  • Coded catalogue: 8,443 drug concepts, 8,298 of them RxNorm-coded, brought in through the CIEL dictionary's crosswalks.

Verification & dispensing

the pharmacy bench

  • Pharmacist verification before anything is dispensed.
  • Controlled drugs require a second signature.
  • FEFO dispensing: stock is always taken from the batch that expires first.

Administration

closing the loop at the bedside

  • Medication administration record (MAR) with a dose engine that creates one record per due dose, so a missed dose always leaves a record.
  • Atomic administration: a dose can never be charted twice.

Stock & finance

every movement accounted for

  • One stock ledger for every movement, with earliest-expiry-first lot consumption.
  • Department stock lockers with approval.
  • Own books: the pharmacy is a business unit with its own accounts; POS sales and voids post automatically, and cost of goods sold uses the cost of the batches actually dispensed.
